Supporting the Integrated and Sustainable Management of Historical Oasis Landscapes in North Africa

A consultation workshop for the project Supporting the Integrated and Sustainable Management of Historical Oasis Landscapes in North Africa took place on 24th and 25th May 2023 in Tunis, hosted by the Tunisian Ministry of the Environment, General Direction of Environment and Quality of Life, and the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries.

The event, funded by the World Bank with the support of PROGREEN (Global Partnership for Resilient and Sustainable Landscapes), was organized by A.R.S. Progetti S.P.A., BTE (Bureau Tunisien des Études) and ArCHIAM (Centre for the Study of Architecture and Cultural Heritage of India, Arabia and the Maghreb).

Thirty experts from Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt, including NGOs representatives, decision-makers, researchers, professionals and representatives of the private sector, gathered to discuss recurring issues faced by historical oasis landscapes of North Africa: sustainable management of water and natural resources, climate as well as socio-economic change, and heritage preservation.

Dr Giamila Quattrone presented on the “Historical Oasis Monographs” project deliverable and facilitated the discussion and reporting on historical oasis landscapes and monographs. Participants in the associated round table discussions highlighted the need for establishing specific legislative instruments for oasis landscapes, the importance of protecting the heritage of these historic manmade landscapes and creating opportunities for sustainable economic development.
